Young people get to work at charity of choice

TWO people from Tynedale will spend the next two months working at the charity of their choice.

Greg Orrock (21), of Prudhoe, will work at the children’s charity COCO, while Heather Williams (20), of Stocksfield, will spend time at St Oswalds Hospice.

They both won places on the Vodafone Foundation’s 2009 World of Difference UK programme.

Greg and Heather join Hexham woman Judith Lloyd (54) among the 500 people across the country who have been chosen to take part.

Judith will be spending two months working at the National Trust’s Gibside estate, near Rowlands Gill.

Greg chose to work with COCO because of his interest in helping with child development. He has previously been a children’s swim teacher and lifeguard. While at the charity, which is involved in education and healthcare in the developing world, Greg will act as an overseas project researcher.

He said: “I was very happy when I found out I’d won, because I get the chance to work as part of a team in making a difference.”

At the Gosforth-based charity Heather will help organise events as part of its fund-raising team.

She said: “I am very excited and looking forward to making a difference and gaining valuable experience.”
